Our Designers Say Goodbye to Shiplap: Here’s What We Love Instead
We know this may be hard for some of you to hear, but it has to be said: shiplap is on its way out.
Shiplap offered DIY ease and coastal charm, but here at ONYX + ALABASTER, we’re happy to see our clients moving toward a more refined, architectural aesthetic. Homes that feel more custom and less cookie-cutter always feel more elevated and timeless.
But not to fear…Shiplap may be a fading trend, but we’re going to show you what to do instead. Whether you’re designing a new build, renovating your existing home, or just looking for some fresh inspiration, here are five alternatives to consider (that will elevate and update your interiors).
1. Color Drenching

This bold yet cohesive look involves painting the walls, trim, and ceiling all in a single hue, creating a moody and inviting space. We love it for its ability to make a space feel intentional and modern without being fussy. It’s especially striking in powder rooms, offices, and dens.
For this design client, we created a moody speakeasy cigar lounge, opting for a bold, all-black color-drenched design. From the walls to the built-ins, every surface was thoughtfully layered in a deep, saturated black to evoke drama, intimacy, and sophistication. Paired with marble accents, brass fixtures, and rich textures, the result is an elevated space perfect for unwinding.
2. Wall Paper

No longer reserved for grandmas or guest rooms, wallpaper is still a favorite here at ONYX + ALABASTER. From bold prints to subtle textures, it brings depth and personality in a way that paint alone can’t. Use it to add an unexpected twist to hallways, bedrooms, or bathrooms.
This powder room we designed is a perfect example of how wallpaper continues to lead the way in 2025 design trends. Delicate, nature-inspired wallpaper adds an elegant layer of texture and warmth, transforming this small space. We paired it with a statement mirror, aged brass fixtures, and an open console sink to keep the space elevated yet airy. It’s proof that even the smallest rooms in the home can make the biggest impact.
3. Brick Veneer

Want texture and warmth with an old-world feel? Brick veneer is your answer. It gives any space a grounded, architectural edge—perfect for kitchen backsplashes, fireplaces, or accent walls. Pair it with modern furnishings for a stunning contrast.
In this kitchen renovation for Needtobreathe artist, Bear Rinehart, we opted for a soft white brick veneer in place of a traditional tile backsplash. The subtle texture adds depth and warmth while maintaining a clean, timeless look. It complements the contrast of dark cabinetry and light countertops, creating a layered, organic feel that elevates the entire space without overwhelming it. It’s a perfect example of how brick can be both classic and unexpected when used in a modern context.
4. Natural Wood Statement Walls

Natural wood is having a refined revival. No longer the outdated styles of decades past, but a fresh, organic take that brings texture, warmth, and architectural interest into modern spaces. We love incorporating raw wood tones to add depth and a sense of calm to a room, especially when paired with clean lines and soft neutrals.
In this primary bedroom, we installed a geometric wood accent wall that instantly draws the eye while grounding the space. The light wood tone adds warmth and softness, beautifully balancing the crisp white walls and black iron details. It’s a perfect example of how organic wood elements can make a subtle yet striking impact when used with intention.
5. O+A Timeless Choice: Panel moulding

We’ll always have a soft spot for woodwork, and panel moulding is our go-to when it comes to adding elegance and structure. It lends a timeless, tailored feel, whether you go traditional with a crisp white or modern with a tone-on-tone application.
In this dining room, we used panel moulding to create a bold focal wall. Painted in a rich, moody hue, the moulding adds architectural depth while maintaining an elevated, traditional feel. Paired with layered textures and natural light, it brings balance and sophistication to the space. Proof that millwork never goes out of style when done with intention.
Whether you’re ready to move on from shiplap or simply looking to refresh your space, these alternatives offer a refined mix of texture, depth, and timeless style.
At ONYX + ALABASTER, we believe your home should be more than just beautiful; it should tell your story. Through thoughtful design and intentional layering, we help create spaces that feel elevated, inspiring, and uniquely yours.
